Agent York // Natalie van der Haast (AU)

AGENT YORK - AU INFO
Name: Natalie van der Haast
Background: Grew up in south Jersey with three older brothers, a piano teacher for a mom, and an auto mechanic for a dad. Comfortable upbringing, though she got into her fair share of trouble growing up. May or may not have joined Project Freelancer as an alternative to other punitive measures in response to some questionable things she may or may not have done with classified information as a soldier.

LOOKING FOR...
Gen: Action (I LOVE to write action/fight scenes), AI drama (gotta have it), mystery and plot intrigue, h/c as long as it's also kinda funny. Missions and heist shit. I love heist shit soooo much I can't get enough of it
Ships: My main ship interests are Wash, Carolina, and Maine, but I can be sold on most York ships. finger guns
I also love a stupid drama triangle, especially when one of them has been dead for a while

I'm down for both shippy stuff and gen threads and I'm down for smut. Feel free to throw down a top level with whatever your heart desires, but here are some prompts to help get the ideas goin'

CANON POINTS
Project Freelancer: Pretty much any canon point in here is golden. Great for actiony missions and AI drama. And also of course the high concentration of pure Freelancer drama.
Post-Freelancer/Out of Mind: That (mumbles)-year period when she's out planet-hopping looking in search of Carolina until she meets her untimely demise at the hands of Wyoming. that ass hole
Recovery One: Yeah yeah York is dead at this point but hey. What if she wasn't

YORK LIVES AUS
The staple of every York player. Here are some of my favorite scenarios to work from but I am ALWAYS down to try new things
Out of Mind/Recovery One: Wash (or someone else!) gets to York before she fully kicks it and patches her back up. And then it's unfinished business time (of both the Carolina and/or Maine variety). Or Freelancer Drama: Electric Boogaloo.
Chorus (option A): York goes to prison for Freelancer Crimes instead of dying and winds up on the Tartarus. Now she's working with Felix and Locus to take out Wash and Carolina. Bonus AI brain trauma from having Delta removed. Freelancer drama cubed.
Chorus (option B): By whatever bulllshit means, York is brought back to life on Chorus somehow. It's been a while since I watched the Chorus trilogy but isn't there something funky with portals in those seasons? idk it's not important. It's RVB anything is possible. The point is: opportunity for really really rich Freelancer drama when your dead friend for whom you've grieved is suddenly back in your life. Also York and Tucker are funny

MISC AUS/PROMPTS
AI Swap: York draws the short straw and gets Epsilon instead of Delta. Things go about as well for her as they did for Wash in canon, but differently bad. Who's here for some hardcore dissociation. Optionally: York is Recovery One.
Ejection Trauma: York loses Delta for one reason or another (AI recall during Project Freelancer. The Meta gets to Delta but she survives. Some other third thing. Take your pick) and transitioning to being alone in your own head is really fucking hard. Who's here for even more hardcore dissociation
Texting: who needs a log when you could do a tfln
Setting Swap: Project Freelancer is very easy to AU into other settings. Like soooo easy. Hit me up I love Project Freelancer setting AUs.

Feel free to hit me up at [plurk.com profile] runawayballista for plotting!

“It is a very cool mercenary job,” Gregor says again, suppressing a smile until York settles down on one knee and his face goes strange for a second, then serious.

“Kuznetsov and Konstantinidis, I request and require your attention for this extremely classified oath-swearing.” The guards start at being addressed directly but they step closer and come quickly to attention. Gregor turns back to York and reaches out.

“Put your hands between mine, like this,” he says, folding cool palms around her own. “And repeat after me. ‘I, Natalie van der Haast, do testify that I am an unsworn freewoman, and take service under Emperor Gregor Ezar Vorbarra as an armswoman simple.’”

“‘And will hold him as my liege commander until my death or his releases me,’” Gregor finishes, and lets her hands slip from his. He can tell she’s taking it seriously and it touches him, though he’s prudent enough not to say so. He reaches out a hand to her to help her up and squeezes it briefly once she’s on her feet before letting go.

“Welcome home.”

“I feel like not being on the run is part of being home,” Gregor says slowly. “I don’t mean home as in Barrayar the planet, necessarily, there’s just… A place for you here, with Us. That’s all.” York probably can’t hear the imperial ‘Us’ in his voice, but he means it anyway.

One of the guards almost says something as York asks to call him ‘Greg’ but Gregor turns to them.

“Dismissed,” he says crisply and they only hesitate a moment before bowing and going to stand on the outside of the door, instead. Gregor swallows a sigh.

“You may call me Greg in private only, please,” he says, the shadow of a laugh in his voice. “I’m not sure if my other armsmans’ blood pressure could take it, otherwise. I have some good news and some bad news—may I give you the bad news first?”

“The bad news is, you are going to have to come with us to Barrayar briefly. I wanted to send you on to the Dendarii straightaway, but my chief of security, um. Insisted.” Gregor ducks his head a little, his expression sheepish.

“I am a little bit in trouble. But that won’t affect you—Captain Illyan just wants to interview you personally before we release you into Miles’ tender clutches.”

“He’s upset with me for not sending my alert signal immediately,” Gregor explains, shrugging just a little. “I can get in trouble with very few people, but Simon is unfortunately one of them.”

He pauses at her question, looking thoughtful for a moment. “Likely a thorough one,” he says carefully. “He wants to make sure I’m not being too… imprudent in trusting you. He’s a very good judge of character.”

“Oh, he’ll probably know all about it already,” Gregor says, sounding almost casual. “If he asks you, it will be to check if you’re lying to him. I sincerely disrecommend trying it.”

Gregor looks a little pained under her gaze, opening a hand helplessly.

“I know it’s not what you wanted and I apologize, but he was very persuasive. And it might be interesting for Delta to speak with him also—he’s the person I know with the Illyrican memory chip.”

“Indeed,” Gregor says mildly—Simon is fine, mostly (he didn’t lose his mind, at least) but Gregor has his own opinions about callously his grandfather had treated the lives of his loyal subjects by letting them be experimented on. He shakes off the dark thought and his mouth quirks.

“I thought we’d put you back in your ship and tow it the whole way, give you some privacy. No, there will be private quarters arranged near mine—unless you’d rather be in your ship, which could be done if you’d honestly prefer it to being on a giant ship filled with Barayarran military types. I would understand if that were the case.”

“Maybe we can get them used to you calling me ‘Greg’ slowly, over the course of the trip,” he suggests, his eyes bright.

“If anyone gives you any trouble—and they should not—please don’t hesitate to let me know. You’re Our personal guest, though, I hope the crew of the Prince Serg is smarter than that. As for your other question, we will be leaving as soon as possible, likely in the next half-hour. Anything you need to wrap up here?”

“Something like that,” Gregor murmurs, his mouth curving. “And, in that case, we can leave immediately. My business here is very thoroughly concluded, and my government is anxious to have me home.” He offers York his arm.

“Shall we?”

“Oh!” Gregor straightens suddenly, turning towards York, his face lighting.

“I forgot about the good news. I can explain on the ship if you’d like.”

It doesn’t take them long to get everything loaded up and on the way home. Gregor has never presented himself as anything other than calm and relaxed except for the brief fight they were in, but he looks somehow much more comfortable after the Prince Serg is out into space and well away from the station.

York is introduced to her quarters as they get deeper out into space, but Gregor snags hold of her arm again before she can venture too far in.

“The good news,” he says, a little conspiratorial. “Come on, it won’t take too long.”

Gregor tries to smooth his expression as best he can, but he can tell York is going to like this so it’s difficult. Nobody even bats an eye as they both go into his (expansive, still-guarded) quarters and settle on opposite sites of a table in the room.

“Fewer than ten people in the universe know about this,” he says, looking serious for a moment. “So I will need to ask you to be discreet please. But I trust you, so here it is—the reason I could promise you a place with the famously Betan Admiral Naismith is that he’s not Betan, he’s Barrayarran, a direct vassal secundus to me, and my cousin. The story of how he acquired his mercenary fleet is quite a fantastic one.”

[personal profile] lets_see_what_happens 2025-08-10 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
“It wasn’t personal,” Gregor says casually, half-shrugging. “And, you’re already sworn to me, and you’ve agreed to work for the Dendarii on top of that. The fact that this is such a secret means there are precious few individuals who are able to liase between Barrayar and the Dendarii. I’m hoping you’ll be one of them.

“But yes, Miles washed out of the Imperial Military Academy and went on a vacation to Beta Colony, where he acquired a freighter ship by accident, then an engineer, then a cargo to the middle of a war zone so he could pay off the freighter. Once he was there he managed to board and take over the first mercenary ship he encountered, made up a fake mercenary identity of his own so nobody tried to revolt, and the rest sort of… unraveled naturally from there. He did very much want to be in the military, and he tends to manifest the things he wants, miraculously. Like I said, I think you two will get along quite well. He’s very interested in second chances.”
